Thumping bass reduction to protect hard drives/multiband compressor?

I have my loudspeakers on the desk as well as my hard drives. Some of my music has loud thumping bass in it. I can use EQ to reduce the bass, but it makes the music in general sound thin. Is there some plugin that will only reduce the loud bassy punches but keep the low end of the music overall? For example some kind of multiband/band-limited compressor where I can set the low frequency band to a low output after compression?
