Resampler: which one is the best?

Hello,

I know that's a long and "subjective" matter, but since a couple of years there are studies about "predictive/physiological optimal audio oversampling" that makes use of new algorithms.

Now, and regardless of this, considering that I have to oversample from 44.1 to 96kHz,  I would like to know which of these two dsp options is (in theory) the best (in terms of best perceived audio output by the most of the listeners):
- dBpoweramp/SSRC
- PPHS

PS: I know, this topic was already discussed... but 10+ years were gone since then... Today we should know a bit more about the "theory of the acoustic up-sampling" and it may be the implementations of these two DSPs changed over time.

Thanks and regards,
Andrea

Hello @m14u , thanks for your tip. Me too came across similar "tech investigations" (these cases are for the critical 44.1 to 48 kHz resampling). We know this trans-coding is critical, but we also know that the resampler has little, if nothing, to add to the original signal.

My case, instead, up-sampling from 44.1 to 96 kHz, requires the resampler to double the quantity of "information".
This implies that the "interpolation or prediction" algorithm used is of paramount relevance.

Any details about this point?

Kind regards, Andrea

Snake oil, probably.

All good resamplers sound the same (at least when both source and target frequencies are high enough; say, higher than 40 kHz).

I don't think so.

All the resamplers mentioned here are audibly transparent. That is no one can hear a difference between the original and the resampled signal.
But the best resampler is SoX. It offers nearly as good signal to noise ratio as dBpoweramp/SSRC but with configurable transition band. Some sources claim the sharp transition in SSRC can cause ringing, though I don't believe it to be audible with working equipment.
SoX resampler is also faster than any other resampler that gets even close to its quality. And the latest versions have signal extrapolation that helps remove glitches during track transitions.
