Save core Foobar settings when updating Darkone Skin?

Hi Folks

Firstly apologies if I am posting this in the wrong section...wasn't sure if a Skin is classed as a Plugin...

Anyway, I am wondering if I can update my current Skin but keep my Foobar settings? I have been using Foobar with the Darkone v1 skin for many years now and would like to update to the DarkOne4Mod skin. I have spent a lot of time optimizing Foobar to play hires files through a USB DAC on a rather slow PC so am very keen that I keep the core Foobar settings and not have to reset everything related to playback. Is it possible to backup the relevant settings folders and start again with a fresh instal of the new Darkone version and then copy over the relevant folders or would I more or less have to start from scratch? Have searched but not really found anything pertinant to this particular issue. Anyway, any advice most welcome!

Thanks in advance.

Chris

Hi,
Settings are stored in .cfg files - like core.cfg, plugin_name.cfg. Recent theme and changes applied to it are stored in theme.fth file. As a consequence, theme is separate from settings, to avoid problems that you are scare of. So you can safely change theme and your DSP chains, decoding settings, etc. will be fine.
I am not 100% sure here, but as far as I remember custom columns AND title formatting expressions are part of Core.cfg file, not theme.fth.

Thanks for the help. Much appreciated. Unfortunately I'm still not sure of the exact approach. I understand that I will need to back up certain folders so that I can keep my playback settings but if someone could possibly list the relevant folders I'd be most grateful. Am I best to then completely start from scratch ie uninstall foobar, reinstall with new skin, then replace relevant folders with my backups? Also, not quite sure where Foojesus fits in to this preocess...or a portable install for that matter?! Apologies for my ignorance. If someone could give me a brief step by step guide to the best order to do this I'd be most grateful. I really only use my desktop for playing music now and have spent so long optimising things that I'm very keen to do it right!

Thanks again.

I have no experience at all with the darkone skins, you should probably ask tedgo, but I just checked the DarkOne4Mod installation procedure and it looks like the following configuration files will be overwritten by an update:

  • foo_ui_columns.dll.cfg
  • foo_uie_esplaylist.dll.cfg
  • foo_uie_panel_splitter.dll.cfg
  • foo_vis_vumeter.dll.cfg

If your settings do not concern any of these plug-ins, you shouldn't be bothered. Core setting should remain untouched, as far as I can see.

Simply backup whole directory located at:
C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Roaming\foobar2000 .
Or in other words (also understandable for Explorer):
%Appdata%\foobar2000 .

If you still use Windows XP it will change to:
C:\Documents and Settings\Application Data\foobar2000 .

Thanks for the help folks. I think that I will start with a clean installation. So, please correct me if I am wrong...Backup  C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Roaming\foobar2000.  Uninstall, reinstall Foobar. Install Darkone skin as per instructions. Replace above AppData folder with my backup. Update Components. Good to go.

One more question... I use FoobarCon Pro too. Does anyone know if I need to do anything additional to backup it or is it covered by the procedure above?

Apologies for my ignorance and thanks again!

If you don't want the hassle searching for folders the next time you want to save your install then follow porus's advice and use a portable install.

Everything regarding plugins (and Core) configuration is inside subfolder \config , which is located inside given parent directory. Each plugin has there its plugin_name.cfg file.

By the way - if you instal your plugins using foobar's GUI, then this way you will backup also your current plugins, so they don't have to be installed again. They are all located inside \user-components subdirectory.
They will not be backed up only if you install plugins in an old fashioned way, putting them unzipped into foobar's Program Files dir, into \components subdirectory.

Sorry folks, I am still confused. If the following configuration files will be overwritten by installing the Darkone skin...

foo_ui_columns.dll.cfg
foo_uie_esplaylist.dll.cfg
foo_uie_panel_splitter.dll.cfg
foo_vis_vumeter.dll.cfg

...then surely when I copy my backed up settings folder it will overwrite some of the relevant Darkone settings. cfg files and causes problems...or are all the Darkone files stored elsewhere?

Please could somebody tell me if the following method will work...

Backup existing  C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Roaming\foobar2000.  Uninstall, reinstall Foobar. Install Darkone skin as per instructions. Replace above AppData folder with my backup then update Components.

Will this work? If not or if there is a better way please could someone please walk me through the steps?

Many thanks again for all the help.

This is what I would do:

  • backup existing  C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Roaming\foobar2000;
  • Install Darkone skin as per instructions (no need to uninstall and reinstall foobar2000);
  • if, and only if, any of your settings are lost, overwrite the relevant cfg files with the ones in your back-up

Thanks for all the help. I have just installed DarkOne v3.1 as I decided that I preferred it to the more recent version. I have copied back all of my relevant backup folders and everything seems to be working perfectly.

Thanks again folks! 👍
