Assuming a competently designed amplifier, and truly comparable specs by AKG, the AKG K712 PRO should always get louder at the same volume as it has a higher sensitivity.

If memory serves, the headphone output on these Steinbergs is rather wimpy, with about 47 ohms in series. (Specs in the manual even yield a 3rd value - 6+6 mW, 40 ohms.) It could only ever get better with an amp on the regular outputs, which are supposed to be good for up to +10 dBu balanced (2.4Vrms and change). I might use a Lake People G103-P or something (fairly local manufacturer here, plenty of oomph, and even a maximum gain of a moderate 14 dB should be sufficient to make K7xx go up in smoke, since the amp can still dish out 7.5 Vrms into 50 ohms, so maybe 8 into 62 ohms - that's about a watt).

Comparing K240 MkII and K7xx on specs alone could be tricky since K7xx sensitivity is rather lower, typically about 90 dB/mW.
