Is It Possible To Convert From M4a To Mp3 ?

Is it possible to convert m4a files to mp3 and if so what is the best program to use for that ?
Maybe this is a silly question but I am not familiar with m4a format.

m4a is mp4.

dBpowerAMP Music Converter with the mp4 Codec will do this.

Why would you want to do this?  In general, converting from one lossy format to another will degrade sound quality.

Is it MPEG 4 Audio you mean by m4a? Then you could try Speek's All2LAME frontend for LAME and FAAD (which you also need to download).

But the standard warning applies here as well: know that it will degrade soundquality - avoid it if possible. You do this because you want to play them on your portable?

Thanks for your replies. I wanted it to be able to play a m4a file on my portable iRiver, which only plays mp3's and wma's.
I tried Spoon's solution and that worked great ! Thanks.
Of course there is some degradation, but no so much noticeable on my portable.
