Stereo or 2.1 output on a 5.1 set up?

I am using onboard 5.1 output from Realtek on my Asus motherboard.  I'm outputting through an optical cable.

When I use either Media Player Classic or VLC Player to play back stereo music both players output stereo ignoring the surround speakers.

Foobar and Boom both seem to 'upmix' to my 5.1 speakers causing a slight echo from the rear speakers. It also causes the sound from the front speakers to sound really weak.  Can that be changed? It's rather disorientating.

I've looked at the output settings and its set to Primary Driver.  I've tried other output choices but none make any difference.  I also tried using the downmix to stereo DSP component but that made no difference either and the 'configure selected' button is greyed out...

It's doubtful foobar would do anything like that on its own.

Do you, by any chance, have something like Dolby Prologic II or similar upmixing enabled in your driver settings? How many outputs are used when you watch a youtube video in your browser?

That's the thing though.  I don't have Dolby Prologic I or II and Youtube plays back in stereo too.  Foobar and Boom are the only two things that upmix in this way.  Like I say, VLC and MPC playback correctly too.

I don't have any of DSP enhancements that Windows supplies in the Sounds control panel and nothing is used in the Realtek utility either...
