No gapless playback with Winamp

Anyone else having this problem? I've recently converted a lot of files to FhG AAC (with the internal converter), only to see that Winamp can't play them without gaps, latest version of course. Foobar on the other hand doesn't make any problems, so maybe it's an issue related to the current build? I couldn't find anything helpful at the official Winamp forums, so I just hope that Chris or someone else here could have an idea.

Are you sure there is no silence at the beginning or end of the tracks?  Most songs ripped from CDs will have leading and/or trailing silence unless it's a "live" CD or the tracks play without silence between them.

If you go to Preferences in Winamp, the DirectSound output has a "remove silence" option.

You can also try the SqrSoft crossfader plug-in (sqracf-1.7.9-1243.exe), which as a gap-killer option.  (I get glitches with crossfading, but I've never tried using just the gap killer.)

Thanks for the answer. I'm pretty sure it's about Winamp here though, since Mp3's don't make problems and Foobar can play the same AAC's just fine as well. Should have probably made that clearer in the opening post, but an older version of Winamp (anything apart from 5.666) wouldn't be a problem too if anyone can recommend some without these issues.

I'm not sure about FHG-AAC having never used it, but FDK-AAC has the following option:

Code: [Select]
-G, --gapless-mode <n>

Method to declare amount of encoder delay (and padding) in M4A con-
tainer.  These values are mandatory for proper gapless playback  on
              player side.

              0      iTunSMPB (default)

1      ISO standard (edts and sgpd)

              2      Both

It seems odd that Winamp would bundle an encoder that creates files with incompatible gapless data,
but perhaps there's also an option to change it somewhere?

I'm just guessing, but it's worth checking.

Sorry, no, I haven't used Winamp in quite a while. Is the current version still the 5.666? Do you have access to an earlier version like e.g. 5.63?

And which bitrate or VBR mode did you convert to? LC or HE?

Chris

Nice to see you here Chris, thanks. Yes, the latest Winamp version is still 5.666. I have tried 5.63 now and made some new conversions (all in LC mode and VBR btw), but nothing changed unfortunately. Maybe I should look for the first builds with the codec implemented, it would be great to know if the issue is also present for other Winamp users here though.
Also thanks to lozenge for the explanation, but switches with the Gapless modes have never been part of the FhG encoder as far as I know, so unfortunately not useable here for me.

I was going to suggest asking about it in the Winamp forums, but I see you already tried that. I'm surprised DrO didn't reply.

If you guys can create two short m4a files which clearly demonstrate the problem, why don't you post these in the Winamp forum so it makes debugging easier for the developers? Or are attachments not allowed? I doubt it's the Fraunhofer codec's fault since that can do gapless encoding/decoding.

The FhG encoder is definately not the problem, as Foobar can play the encodes correctly (forgot to point that out in my last post). I guess going to the Winamp forum will indeed be the best (only looked there for similar topics so far), I was bit reluctant to do this right away, because there aren't any posts about it yet, and the issue might lie with my current Windows setup or whatever.
