Subject: [Flac-dev] CD Baby using FLAC to archive 40,000 CDs

Hey FLAC gang -

Just thought you'd like to know CD Baby has switched to FLAC for archiving the 40,000 CDs
we have in stock.

Luckily HD space is down below $1/gig so we got a 6-terabyte RAID-5 box set up for about
$7000.

Got the FreeBSD boxes churning away night and day, ripping and archiving.

I'll do a more formal press release for ya in a couple months as we're further along, but
just wanted to let you guys know.

This isn't an online thing, just an offline backup system, for long-term use when CDs
aren't the main music format anymore.

I just want to say that CDBaby has impresed me over and over again. I first found out about them from the owner (?) cause he posts on slashdot every once in a while. Liked their website, and their whole view of how music should be sold.

Then they went to the Apple Music Store meeting or whatever, and will be helping artists get their tracks on the Apple store. Very awsome. And now this.

So, if you guys at CDBaby are reading this, very good job! And thanks! And for all others, give their store a shot.

Uh, so what you software are you ripping with? I thought there was no EAC or CDex for anything but Windows.
Everything I've learned about space, I've learned from psytrance.

Probably cdparanoia - CDex uses it as its engine...

They said they're using cdda2wav on freebsd boxen, then dealing with problem discs specially.

40,000 CDs is the first usage I've heard of that is bigger than the FLAC regression test

I have ordered from CDBaby before, and I have had complete satisfaction.  They have a great seemingly untapped resource of independent record label music in all genres.  Really great stuff, I have found some of my favorite bands through this site.  Easy to search, listen, etc, before you buy.  They have great quality stuff.  FLAC only adds to my enthusiasm about the site.
WARNING:  Changing of advanced parameters might degrade sound quality.  Modify them only if you are expirienced in audio compression!
