I still fumble a bit in terminology.
lossless is a lossless quality. Is it?
Lossless means that no information is lost or altered (after digitizing).  WAV is lossless because the digital data in the file is the original data from the analog-to-digital converter (or from the driver).    FLAC and ALAC are lossless compression because when you decompress or play back the file, you get back the byte-for-byte original digital data.

For example, if you convert from WAV to FLAC to ALAC to WAV, that's all lossless and the last WAV is identical to the 1st WAV.

MP3 and other lossy compression formats throw-away (or alter) some of the original data, so when it's decompressed or played back, you DO NOT get back the original data.    (But, a good quality MP3 or AAC can sound identical to the uncompressed original.)

lossy-to-lossy is transforming a file to another file without quality loss. Is it?
With lossy-to-lossy, you are going through a 2nd lossy compression step, which means more data loss.  An analogy is making a Xerox of a Xerox copy...  The copies are not perfect and every time you make a copy-of-a-copy, the quality gets worse.

If you convert from WAV to MP3 to MP3, to WAV, the 2nd MP3 is different from the 1st MP3, and the 2nd WAV is different from the 1st WAV.

mp3DirectCut is NOT lossy-to-lossy because it never decompresses or re-compresses the data.  When you edit a file with mp3DirectCut, of course you are editing a lossy file, but the editing process is not lossy because it doesn't create additional loss.

Isn't it time that this thread had a more meaningful title?

@dodo_maia: Perhaps you could find a volunteer organization that could take your tapes and transcribe them to text?

For many years my father volunteered to take text material and record it to spoken word for the blind. It seems like the reverse would be a good application of volunteerism.

I kinda wonder now which is better at low bitrates, mp3pro or recent Lame

The simple answer is that unless your player properly decodes mp3pro (and not many do) then it probably won't sound that good, due to the bits wasted on sbr.

Someone should really update the mp3pro wiki page.
