Exactly what does lame_v3.99.3_for_windows.exe install?

I need a newer version of lame_enc.dll for Audacity to export to MP3 and everything I see points to installing lame_v3.99.3_for_windows.exe from buanzo's website, but I'd like to know exactly what this will do before executing it - is there an installation wizard or anything? I just need the dll so I'm hesitant to run this without knowing more. thx

That same site offers the download as a zip archive, and the direct download of the dll.
I think you will be able to choose one of these options.

If you just need the DLL you can replace the one you have with the newest one here. It should work fine.

It creates a folder and unzips LAME to it.  Audacity knows to point at that folder.  You can also do this manually:

IIRC, current Audacity is particular about wanting 3.99.3.

thx all - I didn't see the zip option. I just wanted to make sure the EXE wasn't gonna put garbage in the registry

The Audacity dll is not the same as the standard one, it differs in having the full api exposed. I had intended compiling it using 3.99.5 but our problems with rarewares kind of got in the way. I'm not at home over this weekend, but I'll try a build when I return.

BTW, I'll also be looking at alternative hosting arrangements for rarewares as we seem to be unable to resolve the current situation for reasons that appear to be beyond our control - we simply don't seem to be able to ascertain exactly what the problem is!!

What exactly does Audacity need? lame_enc.dll or libmp3lame.dll ?

By default it wants lame_enc.dll (and doesn't work with standard version of it), but it also works with libmp3lame.dll.

With Audacity 2.0.3 and higher you can use libmp3lame.dll from Rarewares which must be renamed to lame_enc.dll.

Just noticed Audacity export to LAME (both 3.99.3 and 3.99.5 libmp3lame/lame_enc.dll) writes two YEAR tags.  If that's within control of the DLL maybe it can be fixed in the new version.

Audacity writes ID3v2.3 header MP3 but it contains not only TYER but also TDRC tag (which is ID3v2.4-specific).
And the file also have two COMM (comment) tags.
